I’m excited to share a heartfelt interview with you today from a friend of mine, Angela Artemis! Her blog, Powered by Intuition, is a wealth of knowledge about using our own intuition to create a better life. She has just written a book that I had the chance to read, and I definitely recommend it! Wow – it’s packed with tons of exercises and guided meditations to help you tap into your own intuition and start benefiting from it right away!

I had the chance to sit down with Angela and talk more about why she’s so passionate about helping each of us follow our inner wisdom. Please read the interview below and then scroll to the bottom to enter to win her new book, The Intuition Principle!

The Intuition Principle reawakens your connection to your true spiritual nature. – Angela Artemis

Much of your life is devoted to developing your own intuition and helping others do the same. Why is it so important that we reconnect with our intuition?

When you reconnect with your intuition you reconnect to your true self. Your true self is who you were meant to be. It is the wise person that knows you belong in the country not the city or in a recording studio not a cubicle. When you are in touch with your authenticity you become a much happier person and your life flows joyfully because you are being true to yourself.

Why is it that we often have forgotten that this amazing gift has been inside of us all along?

In our culture we are trained to look outside of ourselves for answers and validation. We simply don’t believe that all the answers are inside of us.

How will our lives improve simply by reconnecting with this wise part of ourselves?

By re-establishing your connection to your intuition you take the reins of your own power back. Your power comes from acting upon your true desires.

Many of us define intuition as our sixth sense – an inner knowing about something or someone that we can’t explain. It’s a gut feeling that we oftentimes dismiss because it’s too “out there.” How can we learn to trust this wise voice inside ourselves?

The easiest way to trust our inner wisdom is to act upon it. When you listen to your intuition and then take action and find that you are correct your trust will grow. It’s a matter of taking that first step.

You write about the consequences that can occur when we don’t listen to our intuition. In your own life, you stayed in a financially secure job for much longer than your soul wanted you to because – like many of us – the allure of the safety net was too appealing to leave completely. And yet, you were miserable. You had money and security, but your soul was dying inside. This was one of my favorite parts of the book:

By having the fearlessness and courage to jump off this cliff, you allow the wind currents to pick you up and carry you to new places. By taking this leap of faith to rely on your intuition, you free yourself to go beyond the limits of your own personal knowledge.

So many of us can relate to the fear you felt (I sure can). Can you talk a bit more about how crucial it is for our inner wellbeing to let go of the security and the known, take that leap, and allow the universe to catch us?

When your intuition is practically screaming to you that you must move forward in your life and “leap,” you will reach a point where you will either take the leap or not. If you don’t leap at that point, you will probably always look back and regret it.

If you do leap the excitement and joy of taking action that aligns with desires of your true self will change the world around you – because you’ve shifted on the inside. Instead of there being a split between the inner you and the outer you – you become whole. Now, as a “whole” person all your energy can be focused and aligned with what you want instead of being siphoned off to keep part of you under wraps.

All it takes for the Universe to “catch us” is for us to take the first step. As we take the first step the “net appears,” and a path begins to form before us that will take us straight toward the life we’ve always dreamed of.  The path has always been there, but in order for us to see it we must have faith and take the first step. Once we do – we will see it and be able to follow it.

You offer so many wonderful exercises for how we can tap into our intuition. And I love that you liken this practice to exercising. No one would expect to go to the gym once and be completely toned. And, similarly, no one can expect to work on being more intuitive for one day and all of a sudden be psychic! It takes practice, and the exercises that you offer are wonderful ways to build up our intuition muscle.

Because it’s our Month of Meditation and I’m meditating regularly for the first time, I was particularly drawn to your guided meditation exercises throughout. You write that meditation is the single most important tool for developing our intuition. Why is that?

Meditation is undeniably the greatest tool for developing your intuition. When you learn how to quiet the mind you will hear your own intuitive guidance. When your mind is going non-stop your intuitive thoughts will not stand out. They will be lost among the din of non-stop thoughts in your head. When you get quiet you will hear these intuitive thoughts much more easily and much more often. To develop your intuition you must tame the mind first.

As you know, I am a huge believer in using journaling to tap into our higher self. Can you write a bit more about why this is such a key practice to developing our intuition?

Journaling is a direct line to our intuition. It’s a very simple but effective way of dialoguing with your intuition. When you open up to the page and write what’s in your heart you clear the mind. It’s a written form of meditation, where you empty the mind, which creates the “quiet” space for new intuitive insights to emerge. I cannot think of a better way, other than meditation for intuitive inspiration to come through than journaling.

Like you, I believe that we’re all here for a purpose. And I really loved your exercises to help others find their purpose if they aren’t sure. You knew early on in life that you wanted to write, can you share a bit here about a few of the ways how someone whose purpose isn’t as clear to them can find it?

Take out a piece of paper or open your journal and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What interest have I had since childhood that still interests me today?
  • What pursuits am I drawn to continually learn about?
  • What are the things that come easily to me that others marvel at?

This exercise will highlight a certain interest in your life. If you examine this interest you will find a career path to go along with it.

You talk about learning to differentiate our intuition from our ego. Can you tell us a bit more about how we can learn to decipher the two?

Intuition makes you “feel good” about doing something. You will feel excited and experience a sense of “certainty” about it or you might even call it a sense of “destiny.” When a thought comes from the ego, often you’ll feel as if you “should do” it. You’ll be aware of your rational mind recounting the reasons why you ought to do it. Intuition is more of a feeling while the ego is a rationalization that comes from the intellect.

For me, I have noticed that my intuitive thoughts appear in a different part of my brain than my ego thoughts – back of the brain for intuition and front for thoughts – have you ever heard of that?

Jodi, that’s fascinating but, I have never heard of that! I will have to pay more attention to the physical location of my thoughts from now on to see…..hmm, now you’ve made me very curious. Maybe what you are feeling is an activation of the sixth chakra when you have intuitive thoughts?

Maybe!

Can you share an experience from your own life where you didn’t pay attention to your intuition and what happened as a result?

One of the biggest blunders I made that had a huge financial ramification was not selling my house as I planned on doing after renovating it. I bought my home specifically with the idea that I would renovate and then sell it when I was finished. My plan was to stay in in it no more than three years.

I’ve moved many times in my life, and I enjoy moving. I love fixing up a new house and then moving on. But, many people I knew started telling me that for once I ought to “stay in my home and enjoy it,” so I stayed but, I couldn’t shake this “sick sinking feeling” inside that it was a mistake. I allowed myself to feel as though there was something wrong with me for wanting to move all the time and that’s what made me ignore my inner guidance. The real estate market basically crashed a few months later. When I finally sold it five years later I lost money. I learned a huge lesson. Never take advice when it feels wrong to you. When something feels “wrong” that is your intuition speaking to you. Pay attention!

How about when you did pay attention to your intuition and what happened as a result?

The most magical time in my life was following my intuition to quit my job and go back to school. I was never happy in a finance career although I did very well. After working for over a decade I could stand it no more. My intuition was screaming loudly every day, “Get out of here – now!” I quit my job and cashed in all the company stock and went back to school to get a degree in writing and communications. I knew I was in my element because the joy I felt at doing what I had dreamed of doing for so long beamed out of me. As a result I began freelancing for the newspaper and magazines and then started blogging and later went on to write three books. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t followed my intuition.

You write about all of the intuition blockers that can pop up. Do they pop up in your own life still or do you feel that you are able to pay attention to your intuition all of the time now?

I no longer feel blocked but, once in a while things do upset me. When I am upset my mind races with fearful thoughts and that blocks my intuition. I will usually repeat affirmations and meditate until I feel calm and detached from the situation. This usually works to unblock me.

You talk about the fact that we’re entering the Age of Intuition. What do you mean by that? How will our world be different because of it?

The Age of Intuition is a term coined by author Penny Pierce. Years ago any belief in intuition was thought to be on the fringes of society. Only “weird” people believed in it. Now, it is much more mainstream. You hear people talking about following their intuition much more openly.

In the Intuition Age we accept that within us is a source of inner wisdom and guidance – our intuition. We are aware that we – the human race with the exception of perhaps indigenous people – stopped listening to this inner wisdom along while ago in favor of relying on reasoning and rationalizing instead.

In the age of intuition we begin to look within once again rather than outside of ourselves for answers and guidance. When we look within we see the truth that we have been ignoring the calls of our intuition for a long time. In order to satisfy our addiction to materialism we chose not to see that we plundered and polluted the earth and committed many acts of unspeakable violence against our fellow man. We collectively “rationalized” that this was the accepted way of life in our modern world.

Once we begin connecting to our intuition en masse the violence and plundering of our world will drop off dramatically.

When you are connected to your intuition you are connected to the pulse of life in all living things in the entire world. Your capacity for empathy and compassion increases. Developing your intuition is one of the first signs of spiritual awakening.

When we as a people begin to awaken in huge numbers, we will no longer tolerate the violence that is committed against other people and upon our earth. The Age of Intuition will be remembered as a time when we became collectively conscious and changed the future of our world for the better – and it is just beginning.

One of your life purposes is clearly to help others by using your intuitive gifts. Can you write about one experience where your own intuitive ability allowed you to help someone else?

One of the many interesting things that happened to me over the years when I have connected psychically to a person is telling the person that they too possess psychic abilities. I was once in a reading with a physician and told him that I saw that many of his diagnoses came to him psychically upon meeting a patient before even one word was spoken between them. He confessed that this was true although he could not and would not share it with any of the other doctors in his practice. He is now studying medical intuition.

What is your hope that someone will take away from your book and carry with them throughout their life?

Learn to develop your intuition and to listen to it so that you will “know” whether you are on the right path or not. Never give your power away to others by ignoring your intuition. If you feel that something is wrong, or you have a nagging suspicion that you ought to do something or feel reluctance toward doing something you must honor these feelings. This is your intuition trying to guide you toward what is right for you.

Your intuition can lead you directly to what you were meant to do in this life. When you are unhappy about a circumstance in your life think back – and you’ll probably recall that you ignored this nagging voice that wanted you to do something else. Always listen to your inner wisdom.

Once you are aligned with your true purpose, the path before you will become completely clear and your life will flow easily and effortlessly. Learning to trust and follow “The Intuition Principle” will turn your life around from just getting through each day to living the exciting life of your dreams.
